Its a 'Same Shame' that this album was never released on CD as one of the RVGs. In fact I didn't even know that it existed until a couple years ago. But the music is fantastic. Bobby Hutcherson and Harold Land put out some great music in the late 60s and this is no exception. Don't be fooled by the goofy album /5(16). Total Eclipse was Bobby Hutcherson 's first recording session with tenor saxophonist Harold Land, who became one of his major collaborators (and a quintet co-leader) during the late '60s. Land 's rounded, echoing tone is a nice contrast for the coolly cerebral post-bop that fills Total Eclipse. Hutcherson contributes four of the five compositions (the other, "Matrix," is by pianist Chick Corea), and he's in a . The CD reissue of this live album features Hutcherson on four tracks, as a sideman of Charles Tolliver and Grachan Moncur. The sparse quartet with Moncur is particularly interesting, especially on the minute performance of "The Intellect", which may or may not have inspired the ambient movement some ten years later. 9Missing: Matrix · Total Eclipse.
